Too young to drink, too old to vote

Scottish students beware. The SNP think you’re too young at 18 to be able to use the student bar, and that you should wait until you’re 21. But hang on - they also think you should be able to vote at 16. Whatever happened to that stalwart argument of the sixth form debating society: “The government think you should be able to get married and be able to fight for your country at 16, but not buy a pint or vote until you’re 18.” As if differing qualifying ages for different things only applied in Britain or were unusual.

Well, it now looks as if the SNP have given up trying to woo the youth vote. Presumably this move is aimed at stopping binge drinking. Because, of course, young people would never dream of getting drunk with their pals in the park on a Saturday evening if they weren’t old enough to buy the drink themselves…
