Glasgow City Council have come under fire in the past (and rightly so) for labelling black coffee as “coffee without milk”, on the ridiculous premise that the word “black” is somehow offensive. Unfortunately, this isn’t something that’s been made up by the Daily Mail; I was once told by an embarrassed waitress in the City Chambers that I had to order coffee without milk rather than black coffee. Obviously I ignored the advice, determined not to encourage such silliness.
But in relating this story to a friend recently, he told me that at a function at the City Chambers years ago, a friend of his asked a waitress for coffee without milk and was told: “We don’t have any milk, you’ll have to have coffee without cream.”
Don’t know if that story is entirely true, but it deserves to be.
